HOW FAR IS FUKUSHIMA FROM WHERE YOU LIVE?

More than likely, pretty far! So is the danger of radioactive contamination getting to your neighborhood – right? WRONG – more than likely, unless you live up in the mountains and never come in contact with sea water or consume fish or any other kind of sea food!
It is a widely accepted fact that sea water around Japan is polluted with radiation, to a larger or lesser extent. In the meantime, thousands of double-hull/double-bottom vessels continue to ply the trade routes between Japan and the rest of the world. These vessels use sea water as ballast, which they routinely draw and then dump and replace at each port of call.
I live in Athens, Greece, next to the international port of Piraeus, which receives a sizable number of these vessels on a daily basis. Where do you think their ballast water goes? Let me also point out that the Mediterranean Sea is a practically closed basin – pollution at any spot gets around it fast and stays there.  I certainly have no plans to enjoy the sea this coming summer!
In my humble opinion, Japan owes me (and the rest of the world) a huge apology, as well as reparations akin to those claimed by the US government from BP for the Gulf of Mexico contamination!
